I Thought I'd put up the very first story I wrote. Hope you enjoy it!
HAPPY DAYS IN DINDOELA
Chapter 1
It was a warm spring day and the birds were chirping happily in the trees. Red and Flitter were sitting in a tree talking of the harsh winter they had just endured. Suddenly, with out warning, a loud rumble sounded in the distance. Startled, the birds flew to a higher branch in the tree.
“What is it?” whispered Flitter the fearful one.
“I don’t know,” replied Red “sounds big.”
“Yeah”
As they peeped from behind a thick curtain of leafy branches a lumbering car came around a corner and stopped in a little grassy spot near the tree that Red and Flitter were perched in.
“I am going down to inspect.” said Flitter.
“What! not you?” screamed Red.
“Yes me” answered Flitter.
“Well I am going with you.” grumbled Red.
“O.K!” laughed Flitter “come on then.”
So they went, cautiously dancing from branch to branch till they found themselves quite close to the ground. From here they could see three giggly girls gather their things out of the car and watch as the car drove quickly back around the bend. Now the girl set to work. They set up a big tent and then a small one, and were soon busy arranging their things inside. Flitter and Red listened attentively to the girl’s conversation.
“Wow, this is a nice spot. I am glad mum and dad let me come here with you girls and just think the adults are camping in the next…..”
“Ha, Ha, Ha” laughed the other two girls.
“Oh!” Kalah screamed as a big brown spider crawled over her sunny face.
“A spider” peeped Flitter
“No a Huntsman” retorted Red
“Spider.”
“Huntsman.”
Red and Flitters argument was perhaps graciously interrupted by Chelsea speaking excitedly,
“Oh, look at those two birds in that tree. They are gorgeous aren’t they?”
“That’s us” sung Red, “I just know it is. Those girls are sure noisy to my ears what about yours Flit?”
“Don’t call me Flit. Understand?” yelled Flitter, “And those girls are not to noisy for me, silly.”
That night Fitter and Red settled on a branch near the small grassy area that the three girls were camped in.
“What a day” sighed Flitter.
“Yep” agreed Red, “and sorry to say I think you might just be a bit noisy too!”
Chapter 2
The next morning the two birds awoke to some strange noises in the camp below them. The sleepy birds flew to their perch near the ground where they could watch the Girls go about their work. Jessica had lit a brightly blazing fire and Kalah was cooking breakfast over it while Chelsea was gathering more wood for the glowing fire. The two birds watched with wonder as the girls ate and then went down to the nearby stream to wash their plates and have a bath. Red and Flitter took this time to investigate the campsite. They noticed a few things they had missed last night.
“What are those two animals tied to that tree?” questioned Red.
Flitter eager to show her small pond of knowledge answered quickly,
“Dogs. They can be dangerous too. We better be careful with them around.”
“O.K what ever you say smartypants!”
By this time the three girls had returned and were laughing merrily.
“Say,” interrupted Kalah, “aren’t they the two birds Chelsea pointed out last night?”
“You know K I think they just might be. You have a good eye. What do you think Chels? Those birds look mighty curious to me.” Jessica agreed.
“I think you are both right. You usually are you know!” Chelsea laughed, “but now, lets take Missy and BJ for their walk.”
“O.K” agreed the others.
When the girls were gone Red and Flitter decided to look for something to eat themselves. They flew down and alighted on the ground and started hopping around.
“Heres something, Mmmmm, a bread crust. YUM!”
“Oh, here is a pile of porridge that was thrown out. This is good.”
So they found themselves breakfast foraging in the scraps of the three girls who were camped in the little grassy meadow. Suddenly Flitter flew to a branch, Red asked her why.
“The girls are returning” she explained.
Red just told her she was a bit funny in the head and went on gorging himself. But, sure enough the three girls and the two dogs appeared very soon and they marched right into camp.
That night Red apologised for his rashness and for calling her names.
“I am sorry” he said.
“I forgive you” Flitter said in a real sisterly way.
And they slept peacefully that night assured that their differences were made up.
Chapter 3
“Red?”
“Yes”
“What is that noise?”
“What noise?”
“You mean you can’t here that noise?”
“Oh, now I can. I guess I was still asleep.”
“Well, what is it?”
“I don’t know lets go down.”
“O.K”
So they went wondering ‘What on earth is that’. By and by they came in sight of the camp. The bird’s eyes ‘bugged out’ in wonder if the many people. Yes indeed there were more people then the two birds had expected for Jessica’s parent had organized a surprise party for her. In the middle of all the people walked the three girls, whom Red and Flitter had become quite accustomed to, smiling and talking to the many people standing around the camp. They seemed happy enough but the two birds were frightened by the people. The people were waring strange hats and tied all around the camp were brightly coloured balloons. A few minutes later a car rounded the corner, when the door opened a pretty lady stepped out with a big cake! She walked to a gazebo in the center of the meadow which Jessica and her friends had been forbidden to enter or even look into.
Finally the lady who was called mum stepped out of the enclosed gazebo and called for attention.
“Attention. Everybody. It is now time for lunch.” Mum yelled.
Suddenly the place was quiet and a frenzied rush resulted from the announcement. Flitter decided to go a bit closer.
“Red,” She said, “I am going tho go down there and perch on a string. Coming?’
“No. I can’t. Going home to help me missus.”
“What? A missus? Well I never.”
So away flew Red and Flitter to their various places of destination.
As Flitter cautiously flew toward the gazebo she had misgivings about going down alone but her curiosity overpowered her fears and she soon found herself on the ropes near the door. She peeked in. She saw many tables and chairs placed in a hollow circle. Almost every seat was filled. Luxurious food was piled on the tables and on the peoples plates. Mum and some other ladies served and were going from table to table talking and laughing with the guests. Then, Flitter noticed something. The three girls were sitting at the centre table that was receiving the most careful attendance. They were talking with their friends which were all girls. Flitter overheard someone say that this was as special table it was an honour to be chosen to sit at this table. here were about ten girls at this table and they all seemed to be enjoying life immensely. Just than Flitter felt a timid knock on the shoulder. She turned around quickly and who do you think it was? Why Red and MRS. Red, Jennie of course. Flitter started in surprise.
Chapter 4
“What are you two doing here?” she asked. But Red and Jennie didn’t have time to reply. The three girls had spotted them.
“Oh, look.” Chelsea cried. “There are those two birds we noticed earlier and they have another with them.”
“Yes, I see. Don’t you Jessy?” asked K.
“Sure do. They must be very curious to come ‘round here.’
“Yes. Oh, sorry girls we have just notices these two birds and they seem to enjoy watching our movements.” Explained K.
“That’s O.K. They sure are beautiful. Aren’t they?”
“Oh yes. That’s what made us notice them.” Answered Chelsy.
Red looked at Flitter. “So now what have you gotten us into?!” he teased. “We have half the tent looking at us. Let’s go. Come see our nest site.”
“O.K.” Flitter agreed.
Flitter found that the new nest site was perfect and she jumped up and down in excitement. “It’s perfect.” She cried.
“Oh, how I love it. I am so happy for you two.”
“Thanks” smiled Jennie and Red.
“Well, am I ever itching to get back to that party.” Exclaimed Flitter.
“Well, I must admit, I’m curious too.” Said Red.
“Seeing as you both want to go I guess Ill go along too.” And Jennie pretended to sigh; Red and Flitter however knew this ‘sigh’ was fake.
They flew back to the meadow as they talked about various things. Suddenly Fitter stoped without warning and stoped on a thin vine so quickly in fact that Red and Jennie almost flew past her! “I have some sad news for you guys.” She announced.
“What?”
“I’m leaving.”
“Leaving?”
“Yes.”
“But why?”
“Well.” Flitter hesitated.
“C’mon.” urged her friends.
“O.K. Dad flew over from Deloomba yesterday and he wants me to go over there and…”
“Over to Deloomba?”
“Yep. To start a family near him and Mother.”
“WOW. That would mean leaving Dindoela and probably never coming back. HEY? Deloomba is a long way from here.”
Chapter 5
Through all of this Red had not said a word. He was dumbstruck! How could his special friend, Flitter e taken away like this? Suddenly he had an idea. “All this is very disturbing to me,” He said, “But I may have a solution.” He had noticed that both Flitter and Jennie were weeping quietly for they were the best of friends. “What if,” He continued, “Jen and I were to come over to Deloomba too?”
“But you wouldn’t want to. You already have a nest here.” Objected Flitter.
“What’s more important Jen, Fitter or our new nest?” Red asked.
“Why, Flitter of course.” Jennie answered.
“O.K. We leave tomorrow.”
“You don’t mean it do you?” asked Flitter, drying her tears and staring at Red and Jennie in disbelief.
“Oh Yes we do.”
“O.K lets go.”
The three birds frolicked as they flew the short remaining distance to the meadow and arrived just in time to watch the people pack up. Red and Flitter were sad to see them go, but they bravely faced the future as best they could.
The next morning three bird happily flew out of Dindoela and towards Deloomba. They were Red, Jennie, and Flitter.
