"My Son, if thou be surety for a friend...thou art snared with the words of thy mouth...deliver thyself...humble thyself...make sure thy friend...give not sleep tho thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids... (Verses taken from Proverbs 6:1-11)
Promise Made ~ Promise Kept
SURETY = /n/ a person who takes responsibility for another's performance of an undertaking. For example, their appearing in court or paying a debt.
In the first five verses of Proverbs 6, we are cautioned against becoming guarantor for a friend or stranger. Solomon says that such promises are a dangerous snare to our feet.
Perhaps more common in our life are unkept promises. Not big ones. Just the little things. Like telling Mum you'll do something for her and then forgetting. Our word is a promise and promises must be kept! Just take a fleeting glance around you and see people hurting, people dying, wounded by a broken promise. Our lips are a powerful weapon either for pain or for comfort.
