Lest we forget...
Grandpop
Grandpop wasn't an Anzac, he didn't even go to war, but my Granpop was in the Army Reserves and this is my favourite story of all time about him.
Grandpop was a cook in the reserves and at one time, the Army wanted to test how big the scar of destruction would be from a certain bomb. So they set it up in a tower and dug trenches all around it. They told their men (including Grandpop) to get into the trenches and were about to set the bomb off when... the Commander turned up. He took one look and yelled, "Get those men out of the trenches! This is way too dangerous." So all the men clambered out and brushed the dirt off their clothes. Then they assisted to place dummies in all the trenches.
"Let's get out of here." The Commander said.
The men retreated quite a distance and the bomb was detonated. Bang!
When all the dust had settled, the men stared in disbelief. What were they staring at? Absolutly nothing! The tower, the trenches, the bush - it was all just GONE. No sign of any of it remained.
And the dummies? They were never found.
Today, the bush still hasn't grown back. I believe God saved my grandpop's life that day for some special reason.
Today is Anzac day.. A day when we remember those who have died in battles for our country's freedom..
I think it would be good for us to also think of those who have died in battles for spiritual freedom.. Like the martyrs in the reformation, the missionaries, and the apostles..
But most of all let us remember the One who died to be able to give us live, who paid the ultimate price for our sin...
Let us remember Him.. Least we forget...
