I rolled over, tore the canvas open, rubbed my eyes and looked out. The foot of my bed, and the canvas around my head was all white with frost, my black hat seemed to have dulled into a grey. I looked at the frost and thought about how cozy my toes were, even though there was a layer of ice a few centimeters away.
I put my head back on my pillow for a second. Then my eyes focused on the canvas sides of my bed and snapped awake. There was ice inside my swag! My swag that had been closed all night. I felt even more thankful for being warm!
“I’m going to take a jumper to bed tonight.” Declared my sister, Hannah the next morning at breakfast. “I was freezing last night.”
“I was warm.” I said, “I even had ice inside my swag and I was still warm.”
“I was warm.” I said, “I even had ice inside my swag and I was still warm.”
“The only place I was cold was my nose.” Dave said. “It had frost on it.” We all laughed.
“I could tell where Dave’s head had been.” Said Hannah. “His pillow was covered with frost except for where his head was.”
“I’d rather be in my swag then in the camper.” Josh commented. Josh and Tom had been sleeping in the camper van for the last few weeks for some reason. Tom and I both agreed. “You can warm up the space in a swag quicker.”
“Yeah.”
The big frost seemed to spur the boys into action and last night they took their swags, along with Hannah, way down the paddock. It even seemed to give me some ideas after Dave’s tales. So, when I crawled into my swag in the bright moonlight, I folded back the canvas just a few inches and snuggled in with my head peeking out the top, the moonlight streaming over my face.

I slept well, dreaming of koalas and sunsets and baby birds. Even when I awoke, my eyes stayed shut, cozy and comfortable, until I heard Tom, Josh and Hannah come past and Mum call me to make breaky. I pushed back the canvas and looked up. Sure enough, my swag was covered with whiteness again, and my pillow had three shades of blue on it. A dry shade where my head had been, a wet shade where my head had been warm enough to keep the dew from freezing, and a frosty shade. I sighed and rolled over reveling in the thought of all that frozen water, inside and out of my swag, and the warmth which I enjoyed.
I love winter because we get these awesome chilly mornings and then, this morning, but eight thirty, I was walking around outside in a T-shirt. We have the most glorious days in winter here. The sky is cross-eyteingly blue, with not a speck of cloud to focus on and a soft breeze sometimes graces us with it’s presence. What a life! I love it!
