The Katie Journey - Day One

03/02/2013

Today was the first time that I touched my brumby. We got them into the stockyards and when my turn came, Katie was put into the tiniest yards and I, along with my two brothers went in there with her. The boys had already touched her, but I had to introduce myself to her for the very first time. The boys were supposed to tell me what to do and introduce our methods to me but I had read allot and I think that most of what the boys ended up doing and telling me was more of a hinderance then a help.
So I was in here, with my brumby. The rush of adrenaline that I had expected was absent which looking back I have a tiny bit of regret about. It kinda feels like I missed out. But I guess it was really a good thing as I wasn't the least bit nervous.
With my shoulder turned in towards her, and my eyes dropped at her back hooves, I inched towards her. Slowly, slowly. With my weight on my left foot, I would slide my right foot quietly towards her, then roll my weight onto my right foot and bring my left up beside it.
Finally, I could just reach her with the very tips of my fingers if I stretched. I did. Her flank twitched and I jumped! I moved in again ever so slightly and there! I was stroking my brumby!
I was handed a lead-rope and halter and after some help from our riding teacher, she was caught and then I lead her out of the small yard and out into the main yard where I brushed her and talked to her and patted her and loved her.
"Finish on a win." Said Jennie, so I looked her over one last time and took off her halter and lead-rope and she was gone.
